Eternal life or second death!

What is second death?

Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

God loves us and he is able to save us

In the beginning the world was dark and formless. There was no beauty, meaning, living thing or love. God touched a lifeless world and by his power he gave it beauty, a purpose and most importantly love came into the world. He took a lifeless pile of dust, shaped it and gave it life and called him Adam. Adam was to love and to have a relationship with God. God gave Adam life and a heavenly purpose. Adams purpose was to have a relationship with God, to love, obey God, worship him, to discover God’s divine nature and his creation and to rule over it with God’s help.God loves us (1 John 4:8)

Why do people die?

Adam broke God’s law and failed to love God, which was the first “SIN”. Adam was given “precious eternal life” but by sinning he dishonored God and broke God’s commandment so God cursed him (Genesis 3:19) and sentenced him to die i.e. by rejecting God, Adam chose a life without love and became “worthless dust”.

Though Adam rejected God, God made the first sacrifice and showed his love, care and concern by covering Adam and Eve with Animal skin. By this sacrifice God kept a hope for humanity and today our Lord Jesus Christ is the lamb that was slain for us.

We are Adam’s children so we too act like Adam. Every time we sin we are throwing away precious life and choosing to become that dust (dead).

God’s judgment says all who sin must die but by choosing sin every day we are choosing eternal death. On earth everyone will die but those who reject God will face a second death on the Day of Judgment. (Revelation 20:6, 21:8)

What happens after death?

After death in this life there is judgment. God will judge us based on how we have lived on the earth (Hebrews 9:27, Philippians 2:12). On the Day of Judgment He will replay our entire life before everyone. God will expose every secret and public thoughts and actions that we did and he will judge us according to his law just like a judge in the court. If we repented and trusted in Jesus to save us from our past sins and if we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us into obedient, pure and God-fearing life every day then we will join God in heaven as a family member. But if reject the Holy Spirit’s guidance and continue to live a life of lying, sexual immorality, covetousness, divisions, fighting etc (Galatians 5:19-21, Romans 1:29-32) then we will perish in hell and not enter the kingdom of God.

Some facts about Hell

  1. Hell is a place of weeping, torment and unending pain (Luke 16:23)
  2. Hell is an eternal fire that sinners will burn in forever (Matthew 25:41)

Some facts about Heaven

  1. Heaven is God’s house. All those who repented from their sins and obeyed Jesus on the earth will receive eternal comfort , peace and Joy and there will be no hunger, thirst, pain (Revelation 7:16-17  )
  2. Heaven consists of amazing rewards for those who lived a faithful life by following Jesus.

I was born in a Christian family and my parents are Christians will I be saved because of my family?

Salvation is never given through any other person. To be saved we need grace from God through the Lord Jesus Christ and we must respond with repentance from our side! Just because your father or mother were saved does not mean you are saved (John 1:12-13). Only those who personally repent from sinning and are born again by the Holy Spirit will be saved. Everyone has to repent from sin and confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their Lord (Romans 10:9) and believe in their heart. When you call Jesus as Lord that means you are allowing his to rule over your heart, mind, soul and strength (Matthew 22:37). God has granted the Holy Spirit to help you to live a pure life. So from this time onwards you should no longer continue to sin and must start doing God’s good will in every area of your life. As God completes his work of transforming us into the likeness of Christ then we will be saved.

I am not sure that I am saved what should I do?

A map guides you to reach your destination. A good map has all the directions; can anyone reach their goal with half the directions? In the same way God has kept a map with excellent directions to receive “full assurance” of salvation by following Jesus.

A seat belt gives us “assurance” of safety that we will not fly out of the seat in case if an accident or when we hit the brakes in the car, in the same way God has bound us through the (seat belt) Holy Spirit to himself.  The Holy Spirit is given that we will not be thrown out of the assurance of salvation by doubts and confusions.

God’s word the bible says that God has given every Born again believer his “Holy Spirit” to be a map and a seat belt. Romans 8:15-18 says “God’s Spirit joins with our spirit to confirm that we are God’s children. “

Little children feel safe in parent’s arms; does anyone train them to feel safe? In the same way the Holy Spirit will surely comfort and assure you of salvation.

Sometimes we may not have assurance because we have not believed with our heart. If you still have trouble with assurance then go to God, name every sin that you have committed and repent then you will receive his forgiveness and cleansing. Then make an honest and firm commitment to trust and obey Jesus Christ as it is written in the bible then you will surely receive salvation and you will be filled with assurance.

I am saved but I think sometimes sinning is OK, will God overlook it?

It is not God’s will for you to continue to sin and he has made it clear in his word by saying “sin no more” (John 8:11).

Consider the illustration of a man whose roof was leaking. Every time it leaked it spoiled the floor in the room and that man would wipe the floor. It was leaking so many times that the over time that man got tired of cleaning and he decided that to fix the roof was better than cleaning the floor. So he fixed the roof and was free from cleaning the floor after that.

God is wiser than all men, he not only forgives us but he has also made a plan to fix us so that we do not continue to sin. When we are saved God cleanses us and sets us free from our past sins but that’s like cleaning the floor. Forgiveness of sins is just the beginning of salvation. Forgiveness is just one part of salvation. Just as the man fixed the roof and made a permanent fix, God is also fixing us by changing into the Holy, pure likeness of his sinless son Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18). This process is the last part called Sanctification meaning to become Holy like God. Sanctification occurs when we submit to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, then God’s power and grace will help us to overcome sin and become holy.

1Peter 2:1-2 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation

Will going to church, reading bible, singing worship songs save us?

God wants to saves us from the past sins and also the continuing power of sin. By the death of the Lord Jesus Christ we are forgiven from the penalty of sins and by his resurrected life we are given a new life and a fresh start. We can be saved from the power of sin (Romans 6:4, 14) by the power and leading of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:13) provided we walk as God has commanded.

Are you doing these activities out of love for God or to impress people? You may have been going to church, reading bible, singing songs for many years but can you say honestly before God that you love God and are following Jesus wholeheartedly in love, purity and obedience? We must do these acts of reverence out of love for God but such activities by themselves do not save us. God desires obedience to his commandments more than any other activity. If we deliberately continue to sin we are in danger of hell but if we overcome sin by the power of Holy Spirit then we will dwell with God as his sons and daughters.

E.g. a person may have many years of bible knowledge and can quote the bible and may even be much respected in the church. But God will be pleased only with the way that person lives, not by his reputation and knowledge .A young person who has less knowledge , little reputation and may be ignored in the church yet keeps God’s commandments diligently and obediently is much more pleasing in the sight of God.

I am saved yet why do I sin?

We all have sinful nature in us that constantly desires sinful pleasures but God has given us the Holy Spirit to defeat that sinful nature and live a Godly life.

1John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Deliberately practicing sin will lead to eternal death

1John  3:6  No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

1John  3:8  Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil,

God’s desire and plan is that you may not sin

1John 2:1  My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

When we fall into sin the Lord Jesus Christ is our help

Wholehearted believers In spite of their best intentions may be caught or fall into sin due to the weakness of the flesh e.g. like impulsive anger. We do not have to sin but if we fall, we can repent and Lord Jesus will grant us forgiveness.

Galatians 6:1a Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression,

1John 2:1b But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

God is able to keep us from falling into sin

Jude 1:24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

How can I be saved?

To be saved you must enter into God’s new covenant or agreement. You should receive Jesus Christ as Lord then you will be forgiven and God will purify your life. There are 2 parts to any agreement, God’s part and Man’s part.

First Part: In love God gives us the right to become his children by forgiving and then enrolls us in the school of his Holy Spirit Where we learn to become like Jesus.

Second Part: To love God and to keep his commandments was impossible before we were saved. But now we have the Holy Spirit who is our teacher, our comforter, our source of power. So now we can and must keep God’s commandments which is to love God and love man (Mark 12:30-31). We must also agree to receive God’s forgiveness and willingly Joins God’s school. In the school of the Holy Spirit we will learn to love God, hate sin and fulfill God’s will for us in this life.

  1. Agree with God’s judgment that you have sinned and that deserve God’s punishment.
    1. a.    Romans 3:23  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
  1. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ that he is God who took a man’s form and came down from heaven (Philippians 2:8). He is the only true way and his word is the only light to deliver us from the darkness of hell and he will lead us to eternal life.
  2. Believe that by death on the cross the Lord Jesus Christ bought the forgiveness of your sins. You are bought with a great and precious price.
  3. Repent of your sins and decide never to do it again by the Holy Spirit’s power. (2 Corinthians 5:15)
  4. Believe that the Holy Spirit is dwelling in you and be submitted to the Holy Spirit’s guidance
  5. Promise to obey every single commandment of God and live like the Lord Jesus Christ. God will give you the power to fulfill his will.

Does it mean that we have to earn our own salvation by doing good works?

Salvation is a free gift of God. God’s gift is given because of his own goodness and grace so it cannot be earned or demanded. No amount of good work can save us. Salvation is explained in the bible as a God’s continuous work all through our lives starting from our past, through the present and into the future. The goal of salvation is for our nature to be transformed into the likeness of the Lord Jesus.

PAST: In the past we receive forgiveness from the Penalty of sin

PAST: In the past we receive forgiveness from the Penalty of sin

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).

PRESENT: In the present we are saved from the Power of Sin and this present work of God is called sanctification.

PRESENT: In the present we are saved from the Power of Sin and this present work of God is called sanctification.

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

FUTURE: In the future we will be saved from the Presence of Sin. This work of God is called redemption.

FUTURE: In the future we will be saved from the Presence of Sin. This work of God is called redemption.

Romans 5:9 since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Overcoming sin and good works are proof that God is working salvation in our life.

1John 2:6(NLT) those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

What is repentance?

Repentance is the first step toward salvation. God is righteous and he is ruling over all creation. In his government there are commandments that he has established. We need to live by those commandments e.g. the 10 commandments (Deutronomy 5:6-14). But by lying, cheating, coveting in our hearts we constantly break the commandments and sin against God. So according to his law we deserve to be punished in the fires of hell. But God is also compassionate and loving therefore he sent Jesus to help us to turn from our sinful life to a new godly life and fulfill God’s will. Now we have a new desire and the power to partake in God’s divine nature (2Peter 1:34).

A sinner after coming to know about Jesus desires to hold on to the new life in Jesus and let’s go of his old life, that’s called repentance.

Lord Jesus Christ displayed a great love of God by dying on the cross. Jesus died for us because no one else could save us from hell except him. He loves us so much that he suffers by being born as a lowly man, and then to experience our weakness, he lives with temptation, hunger, thirst and weakness and eventually dies a painful, humiliating death to take away our sins and he does all this without committing a single sin. Why did he suffer? He suffered because of our sins. In his great love he exchanged his eternal life for our many sins.
